Set in Nazi-occupied Belarus during World War II, The Ascent follows two Soviet partisans who brave harsh winter landscapes in search of food to sustain their fellow escapees. Larisa Efimovna Shepitko was born in Artyomovsk, Ukraine. The last important student of director Alexander Dovzhenko at the Moscow Film School (VGIK), she adopted his motto, "Make every film as if it is your last", as her own.
