Her name was Larisa Shepitko, and, even if you're a film buff, the chances are Larisa Shepitko’s black-and-white feature film Voskhozhdeniye (The Ascent, 1977) is based on the 1970 novella Sotnikov by the Belarussian writer Vasil Bykov. Set in Nazi-occupied Belarus during World War II, The Ascent follows two Soviet partisans who brave harsh winter landscapes in search of food to sustain their fellow escapees. Larisa Efimovna Shepitko was born in Artyomovsk, Ukraine. The last important student of director Alexander Dovzhenko at the Moscow Film School (VGIK), she adopted his motto, "Make every film as if it is your last", as her own.

Ukrainan-born filmmaker Larisa Shepitko attended famed Russian cinematography school VGIK, where she was a protoge of Alexander Dovzhenko (Earth) and peer of Andrei Tarkovsky (Solaris, Stalker Larisa Shepitko was a Soviet film director, screenwriter and actress. She graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in 1963 with her prize winning diploma film Heat.
